David spares Saul's life at the En-gedi cave

Introduction to 1 Samuel 24:1-22
David Chooses Mercy in Sparing Saul's Life

David is on the run from Saul, who is trying to kill him.  In a cave at En-gedi, David has a chance to kill Saul but chooses not to.  This leads to a face-to-face encounter in which David expresses his respect for Saul's position as the Lord's anointed King.  This encounter seems to cool down Saul's fierce pursuit of David, but it also reveals to Saul how full of kingly character David is.  Saul "sees the writing on the wall" and asks David to be merciful to his family when the time comes for him to be king.  David gives him the assurance he asks for.

Key Characters in 1 Samuel 21-26

  • Saul - King of Israel (God's people); hunting David all over the region, seeking to kill him.
  • David - Once popular hero now a fugitive on the run with a band of men.
  • Ahimelech - Priest of Nob, fed David and his men with holy bread and supplied him with the sword of Goliath.
  • Doeg the Edomite - Chief of Saul's shepherds, who followed Saul's order to kill the priests of Nob and their families.
  • Abiathar - Priest of Nob, son of Ahimelech, who escaped the slaughter and provided assistance to David.
  • Nabal - a rich rancher in Carmel who insulted David, inspiring David's wrath; after the merciful intervention of his wife Abigail, he died when he learned what happened.
  • Abigail - Nabal's wife who creatively intervenes with David pleading mercy; after Nabal dies, David wooed her and she became his wife.
